ACE inhibitors-common drugs for treating high blood pressure-can be killers in black patients, researchers have discovered.
Most drug trials that have concluded that the drugs are safe have been carried out among white patients-even though black people are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension).
When the drugs are given out in the ‘real world’, doctors are seeing very high rates of complications, and even deaths, among black patients with high blood pressure, say researchers at New York University’s Langone medical centre.
They made the discovery when they investigated the health records of around 60,000 hypertensive patients.
