Conversely, men who eat plenty of polyunsaturated fats, in foods such as fish and nuts, will have a more benign form of the cancer, and are more likely to die with the disease than from it if it develops later in life.
Eating less saturated fats could also reduce the risk of heart disease, say researchers from the University of North Carolina.
The researchers made the connection between diet and the aggressiveness of the cancer after they surveyed 1,854 men who had recently been diagnosed. Those who ate the most saturated fats also had the more aggressive form.
