You’re also less likely to put on weight, say researchers from the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health.
Preparing meals five to seven times a week reduces the risk of diabetes compared to cooking two or fewer meals at home, they concluded, after studying large numbers of health professionals for occurrences of diabetes and the food they were eating. Instead, people who were not preparing their own meals were ordering takeaways or were eating out at fast food restaurants.
The researchers also discovered that preparing meals at home reduced weight gain and obesity, another contributory factor for diabetes.
They suggest that along with exercise and diet, cooking meals at home should be added to the measures we can take to prevent diabetes.
