Anti-vaxxers think differently, psychologists reckon

The study reckons that anti-vaxxers think differently from the rest and see threats and dangers that aren’t as likely as they fear.

Researchers from Texas Tech University say they are excited by their findings. “It could end up being a way of reaching this diverse group,” said lead researcher Mark LaCour.

The researchers asked 158 people to estimate the likelihood of a range of bad experiences, from being bitten by an animal and having a car crash. Those who estimated a high chance of an adverse reaction to a vaccine also thought there was a higher probability of other life experiences too.

But just ‘educating’ the anti-vaxxer isn’t going to work. A better way to convey the idea that vaccine risks are low needs to be found, the researchers conclude.
