Problems of old age may have nothing to do with getting older, and everything to do with a drug the person is taking.
But because the doctor doesn’t suspect the drug, he prescribes another drug to treat the side effects of the first drug.
Researchers at Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Ontario discovered a cascade of 24 health problems and drugs from just one drug that could lead to a prescription for another. In one example, they explored the fallout from a NSAID (non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug) prescription, commonly prescribed to reduce pain. The drugs can increase blood pressure, and this can all too easily trigger a prescription for an antihypertensive.
