Two sugary drinks a day double risk of type 1 diabetes

Everyone knows that sugary drinks can cause obesity and type 2 diabetes—but they could be doing even more damage than that. Drinking just two or more cola drinks a day could be triggering a more serious form of the disease that can develop into type 1 diabetes, where the sufferer must inject insulin every day to stay alive.

The risk is the same whether the drinks are sweetened or are ‘diet’ versions, when artificial sweeteners are used. Just drinking two or more cans or bottles a day can more than double the risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, or LADA, which has similar symptoms to type 2 diabetes but can develop into type 1, and is sometimes called type 1.5 diabetes.

Drinking two 200ml drinks of sugary or diet cola increases the risk of LADA 2.4 times, say researchers from Karolinska Institute in Sweden, who examined the diets of 357 people diagnosed with LADA and compared them to 1,136 people with type 2 diabetes and 1,371 healthy adults.

The sugary colas could be causing insulin resistance, the hallmark of diabetes, and the diet drinks may be interfering with bacteria in the gut, causing glucose intolerance, the researchers say.
