Couch potatoes are smarter? Discuss… image

If you’re a couch potato, you now have the perfect excuse: it’s because you’re smarter. People who lounge around are likely to have a high IQ, and are happy to be lost in their thoughts, a new study claims.

Smarter people don’t get bored and so don’t have the compulsion to be active, such as doing housework or going down the gym, say researchers from the Florida Gulf Coast University.

The pattern is the same whether it was a day in the working week or at the weekends, the researchers discovered when they fitted fitness trackers to a small group of students, who were split into two groups, depending on their desire to tackle projects that were mentally taxing.

But it’s not a good thing; everyone needs to exercise, says lead researcher Todd McElroy, and smart people need to be more aware that “they have a tendency to be less active, coupled with an awareness of the cost associated with inactivity. More thoughtful people may then choose to become more active throughout the day.”
