Have a few alcohol-free days to reduce breast cancer risk

If you're a woman, taking a few alcohol-free days a week could help keep breast cancer at bay, even if your current drinking levels are well within current safety guidelines

If you're a woman, taking a few alcohol-free days a week could help keep breast cancer at bay, even if your current drinking levels are well within current safety guidelines. Just drinking one alcoholic drink every day slightly increases the risk, a new study has found.

However, men don't seem to have the same risk. As long as they don't smoke, they can drink between one and two alcoholic drinks a day without increasing their chances of developing cancer, say researchers from Harvard University.

Their recommendations-based on studies of 88,000 women and 47,880 men-go against current safe drinking guidelines, which merely set a weekly limit on the amount of alcohol we can drink without impairing our health.

It's already been established that heavy drinking can lead to several cancers, but the researchers have found that the risk is there even when women drink just one glass of alcohol every day, and are categorised as 'light' drinkers.
