What's the best diet if you want to lose weight quickly? Cutting out meat and dairy-and sticking to a vegan diet-will help you shed the pounds faster than anything else, a new study has found.
It's been tested against four other diets, and it's the best way to lose weight quickly, and also reap the most health benefits, such as lower BMI (body-mass index), and reduced levels of fats and saturated fat in the body. The key is in removing all animal produce from the diet, such as milk and dairy, say researchers from the University of South California.
They tested a vegan diet against a vegetarian diet-which allows animal produce such as milk and dairy-an omnivorous diet, where nothing is excluded, a semi-vegetarian, when people occasionally eat meat, and a pesco-vegetarian, where the only meat consumed is fish.
At the end of the six months of the study, those who stuck to a vegan diet had lost an average of 16.5 pounds, which was 4.3 per cent more than that achieved by any of the other diets.
The researchers say their findings suggest that carbohydrates don't put on the weight. You can lose weight when you're eating pasta, rice and other grains, just as long as you steer clear of all animal produce, they say.
