Should you drink coffee or tea when you're going through the menopause? It all depends: postmenopausal women suffer worse hot flashes and night sweats when they drink caffeine, but women still going through the menopause find their mood, memory and concentration are helped by the drinks.
Understanding the impact of caffeine on the various stages of the menopause should help women manage their symptoms better, say researchers form the Mayo Clinic who made the discovery.
They based their findings on a questionnaire completed by 2,507 women who sought help for their menopausal symptoms at the Mayo Clinic from 2005 to 2011.
Other recommendations include:
o Be aware of 'triggers' in spicy foods that could make symptoms worse
o Limit alcohol and tobacco
o Dress in layers
o Try cooling materials on the bed at night
o Try stress management programmes such as meditation, yoga and Tai Chi
o Maintain a healthy weight
