CEE hormone therapy for postmenopausal women increases the risk of thrombosis and heart attack, new research suggests

CEE hormone therapy for postmenopausal women increases the risk of thrombosis and heart attack, new research suggests.
Conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) therapy is more dangerous than alternatives such as estradiol therapy, say researchers from Washington University. It increases then risk of venous thrombosis, or blood clots, and heart attack.
They studied the progress of 384 postmenopausal women aged between 30 and 79 who were taking either CEE or estradiol, the two most popular hormone treatments. During the study, 68 women had a thrombosis, 67 had a heart attack and 48 suffered a stroke. Apart from strokes, more of the incidents were among women taking CEE.
CEE is manufactured from the urine of pregnant mares, while estradiol is a natural, and bio-equivalent, estrogen, the researchers say.
