Twenty-six per cent of people with moderate to severe anxiety said their symptoms had disappeared after taking Kava supplements twice a day for up to six weeks.
Researchers from the University of Melbourne said none of the 75 participants suffered any adverse reactions to the supplements, and there were no dependency issues that are often seen with drugs.
All of the participants had been clinically diagnosed as suffering from generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). They were given either 120 mg of Kava twice a day for three to six weeks or a placebo, or sugar pill. Those taking the Kava had a dramatic reduction in anxiety symptoms, but the most impressive results were seen in those with more severe anxiety.
