Swine flu jab causes sleeping sickness in thousands of children

The swine flu vaccine-which was given to around 25 per cent of the population at the height of the scare in 2009-causes narcolepsy, or sudden daytime sleeping. Children are especially likely to develop the sickness, say researchers, who estimate the vaccine increases the risk 16-fold, or 1600 per cent.
The vaccine, Pandemrix, may have caused thousands of new cases of narcolepsy, especially among children and adolescents. The vaccine causes narcolepsy in one out of every 52,000 people vaccinated, say researchers. The alarming extent of the problem was uncovered when the researchers reviewed case notes of 245 children aged from four to 18 who had been vaccinated; of these, 75 had developed narcolepsy.
Overall, say the researchers, the vaccine increases the risk 16 times if the person was vaccinated within six months before narcolepsy started. This could translate into a major health problem; in the UK alone, 25 per cent of healthy children aged under five years and 37 per cent of children aged between two and 15 years who were more 'at risk', were vaccinated against the influenza A (H1N1) 'swine flu' virus in 2009.
