Revealed-why Greek islanders live longer than anyone else

The Greeks may be having all sorts of problems with their economy, but they seem to know the secrets to a long life

The Greeks may be having all sorts of problems with their economy, but they seem to know the secrets to a long life. People on the Greek island of Ikaria live longer than anyone else on the planet, and scientists have finally figured out what they're doing that's so right.
The islanders drink cup-loads of boiled Greek coffee every day, and this may well be the reason that one per cent of them live past the age of 90-which is ten times the rate of other populations around the world.
Around 87 per cent of the islanders drink the coffee, which is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. The coffee seems to help maintain the endothelium, a layer of cells that line the blood vessels and keep them healthy. For these reasons, boiled Greek coffee is healthier than other types of coffee, say researchers from the University of Athens Medical School.
