Two plants could hold key to diabetes and obesity treatment

Drug researchers are turning to herbal medicine to find a more effective remedy for treating diabetes. They think that the plants they have selected could also help people lose weight.
The plants, Cassia auriculata and Cassia alata, could have active ingredients for treating diabetes. One of the plants' compounds, kaempferol 3-0-rutinoside, is eight times more potent than the standard anti-diabetic drug, acarbose.
The plants, which grow in South-East Asia, have anti-diabetic and fat-lowering qualities, which suggest they might also help reverse obesity.
Researchers from the University of Greenwich say their research into the two plants could prove to be a crucial breakthrough in the treatment of diabetes.
