It's something we all suspected, but now it's been proved: the time when you eat has as much impact on weight loss as what you eat. The later you have your last meal of the day, the slower you will shed the pounds-and that final meal is far earlier than you thought.
Ideally, you should have your final major meal of the day before 3pm if you want to achieve the most weight loss, say researchers from the Brigham and Women's Hospital.
If you have your final major meal of the day-when up to 40 per cent of your daily calorie requirements are consumed-after 3pm, your weight-loss will be slower, and you'll also have lower insulin sensitivity, a risk factor for diabetes.
In a review of the eating habits of 420 overweight people in Spain, the researchers noted that the late eaters also were more likely to skip breakfast or eat very few calories with their first meal.
So eat a good breakfast and a hearty lunch before 3pm if you want to lose weight. It's fine to snack after 3pm, but don't make a meal of it, say the researchers.
