Canada has joined Russia, Israel, Belgium, Germany, India and France in issuing a warning about using mobile (cell) phones because they may potentially cause cancer, especially among the under-18s.
Calling and texting on the phones could be dangerous, especially if used constantly for a lengthy period, say researchers from Health Canada, the country's health regulator. In a new report, the Canadians say the phones are "possibly carcinogenic to humans".
The Russian health authorities have already warned all adolescents under the age of 18 against using the phones, while France has banned their use in kindergartens and junior schools.
The new bans and cautionary warnings follow a study that discovered that the brain was affected following 12 months' usage, although the researchers were unable to confirm whether the devices caused cancer.
