Pollutants such as PFCs (perfluorocarbons) are directly responsible for triggering early menopause, scientists have discovered.
Women whose menopause has started prematurely - often as early as 42 years - have very high levels of PFCs, in particular, and are low in estrogen.
PFCs, which are found in food containers, clothing, furniture, carpets and paints, are also cause heart problems and lower the immune system.
Researchers from the West Virginia University School of Medicine discovered the role of PFCs in early menopause when they analysed the blood of 25,957 women aged from 18 to 65 years.
