Avandia still not banned, and still killing people

What does it take to get Avandia, the discredited type II diabetes drug, banned around the world? A new study - which proves it can be a killer - might just do it for all the countries, including the US and Canada, that still prescribe it.
Avandia (rosiglitazone) was banned throughout Europe last year, a late decision perhaps, but one that has at least saved some lives, as a new study has found.
The drug is responsible for 1250 heart attacks, heart failures and deaths for every 100,00 people who take it. Overall, it increases the risk of heart attack by 16 per cent, congestive heart failure by 23 per cent and death by 14 per cent.
As around 3.8 million Americans are taking the drug today, this suggests that 47,500 of them will die - or suffer a crippling heart problem - as a direct result.
Researchers from the European Medicines Agency analysed the drug against another type II diabetes thiazolidinedione drug, Actos (pioglitazone).
