Diet soda - such as sugar-free cola drinks - could be responsible for stroke and heart attacks, a new study has found.
The study, based on the lifestyles of around 2,500 adults living in the New York City area, discovered that the drink dramatically increases the risk for stroke or heart attack.
Diet drinks use artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which could be responsible for the increased risk to heart health.
The researchers say that the drink is the one risk factor that remains after they have accounted for other possible causes, such as obesity, smoking, and lack of exercise.
The research team says there is one simple remedy: drink water instead.
