Extracts of passionflower or kava and combinations of L-lysine and L-arginine are effective treatments for anxiety disorders, and any side effects are mild.
Researchers at the Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation in Los Angeles analysed the results of 21 medical trials, involving more than 2,000 participants. Of these, 15 trials showed positive results for people who used the supplements or herbal remedies.
Magnesium and St John's Wort - which has been proven to help combat mild depression - were not as effective against anxiety disorders, the researchers said.
