Scientists, and leading health and environmental experts have been putting new evidence to the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER).
Even before hearing the latest evidence, SHER has been reticent to recommend mass fluoridation of water throughout the EU. In a preliminary note, it has stated: "Fluoridation is a crude and rather ineffective form of systemic fluoride treatment to prevent dental caries without a detectable threshold for dental and bone damage."
At the meeting, on September 17 in Brussels, Prof Vyvyan Howard, a molecular bio-scientist at the University of Ulster, said that the chances of approval of mass fluoridation was remote, based on the current safety information.
