* Vegetarians are at less risk of diabetes than meat-eaters because their levels of blood iron are much lower. High iron levels are associated with diabetes. The message for carnivores is: keep your body-iron stores close to the bottom of the normal range (Br J Nutr, 2001; 86: 515-9).
* Fish, not carrots, can make you see better, particularly as you get older. Macular degeneration of the retina is rare in people over 50 who eat a lot of fish. A healthy retina is chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids - the ones found in fish oils (Arch Ophthalmol, 2000; 118: 401-4).
* Omega-3 fatty acids is also good for epileptics. A special margarine containing these fatty acids eaten at breakfast for six months markedly reduced the incidence of grand mal seizures (Epilepsia, 2002; 43: 103-4).
* Californian psychiatrists aren't all they're cracked up to be. Over half of them failed to give patients proper treatment information with the antidepressants they prescribed (JAMA, 2002; 288: 1403-9).
