* Men taking Viagra (sildenafil) at the same time as the opiate pain reliever dihydrocodeine may get more than they bargained for. Two case reports show that the combination can result in priapism - a prolonged, painful erection (BMJ, 2002; 324: 1555).
* A man treated with pantoprazole and methotrexate had generalised myalgia and bone pain. By replacing pantoprazole with ranitidine, his symptoms eventually disappeared (BMJ, 2002; 324: 1497).
* Data in medical journals are misleading and may suggest greater benefits with a drug or procedure than there really is. Also, too often, reports ignore trial limitations and important differences between study groups (JAMA, 2002; 287: 2813-4, 2856-8).
* Good-quality, properly fitting shoes are just as effective at preventing diabetic foot ulcers as customised therapeutic inserts and footwear. Well-fitting shoes are also much less expensive than the custom footwear often recommended by specialists (JAMA, 2002; 287: 2552-8).
