Electromagnetics researcher Roger Coghill has been given provisional approval to proceed with a legal action under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 against a distributor of mobile phones alleging that all such phones should carry a warning that excessive use can cause health problems.

At a press conference in London on 2 December, Coghill outlined the reasons behind his action, which he is taking against Messrs Vodafone Centres of Cwmbran, Gwent, Wales, through the local Magistrates Court. Normally such actions are initiated by the local Trading Standards Authority, but they had refused on various grounds and advised him, as did solicitors, that they did not think an individual was allowed to take such an action.

At the press conference he covered effects on enzymes, the blood brain barrier, retina, DNA and lymphomas in mice, as well as reports of persistent headaches, eye problems and memory loss in humans.
