One overlooked cause of hypertension (high blood pressure) may be long term lead accumulation in our bones, researchers have suggested.

Although lead levels in blood have been recognized as being dangerous, particularly in children, very little research has looked into levels in bones, which is a marker for long term lead accumulation.Researchers from Harvard Medical School tested 590 men and found those with high levels of lead in the tibia and patella bone were also hypertensive. They reckon that men with higher lead levels in their bones are 1.5 times more likely to develop hypertension.
