Drug company sweeteners to doctors to encourage them to prescribe their products are to be outlawed under legislation due to come into force in 1994.

The changes to the British Medicines Act based on EC regulations-will aim to impose strict limits on the amount of hospitality and gifts that can be offered, including trips to exotic locations to hear about a new product launch.

The Government move follows complaints that Fisons had offered bribes to doctors who prescribed its asthma treatment, Tilade Mint.

A report in the LondonSunday Times (7 November), claimed the company had offered lb10 for each new prescription. Fisons has launched an internal inquiry but claims its activities had been "misrepresented"
