Hip ops: patients die

One in every 90 patients undergoing total hip replacement will die and one in every 35 return to the hospital for emergency readmission within a month of the operation

One in every 90 patients undergoing total hip replacement will die and one in every 35 return to the hospital for emergency readmission within a month of the operation.

So says a study of 11,607 records of total hip replacement between 1976 and 1985 conducted by the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Oxford.

The study found that 11 of every 1000 THR patients died within three months of the operation and 28 of every 1000 had to have emergency readmissions. Most deaths had to do with cardiovascular events, and most emergencies, with strokes. Not surprisingly, the study called for examinations of ways to keep patients from dying off.
