Several recent outbreaks of infection occurring in American hospitals have been caused by inadequately sterilized flexible fiber optic endoscopes and brocho scopes, according to The Centres for Disease Control.
* Dental procedures, particularly those requiring local or general anaesthesia, could be a factor in loss of hearing.The British Medical Journal (26 October 1991) reported four patients with a sudden onset of deafness over the past few years, all shortly after a dental procedure.
Although the only common factor was opening the jaw widely and having the procedure done, Sheffield researchers postulated either that bacteria is released after extraction through nerves to the inner ear or that anaesthesia could cause a spasm in one of the tiny veins inside there.
* After three cases of heart complications following use of the new abortion pill the World Health Organization has recommended that the dosage of mifepristone used can be reduced by at least two thirds without lessening its effectiveness. British Medical Journal, 19 October 1991.
