Patients respond better to package inserts providing clear information about a drug in simple language

Patients respond better to package inserts providing clear information about a drug in simple language.

So concludes an Italian study, which compared the preferences of nearly 7000 patients given a typical drug company package insert, one approved by the Italian Ministry of Health and the other an experimental sheet prepared by the research group and providing information about what the medicine contained, what it is intended for, in a clear format and in everyday language. Some 78 per cent preferred the experimental leaflet, 90 per cent claiming that they understood the contraindications of the drugs better in the easy to understand pamphlet.

"Up to 50 per cent of those who took over the counter drugs indicated a disposition to change their drug seeking behaviour on the basis of the information in the experimental sheet," said the report.

"More extensive and systematic work is required to develop an improved consumer oriented language for widely used drugs," the report concluded.
