Homeopathy for male disorders

, or breast development in men, is common in puberty and in old age

Gynaecomastia, or breast development in men, is common in puberty and in old age. Ingestion of the oestrogenic residues of all pesticides, fungicides and herbicides used in the production of grains, fruit and vegetables could be a cause. Gynaecomastia is also a feature in disorders such as liver cirrhosis, steroid dysfunction, thyrotoxicosis and tumours, and some pharmaceutical drugs can cause the condition permanently, such as spironolactone.

The French method of isopathic drainage ('organic cleansing') using Spironolactone 7CH is curative, even where cirrhosis is the predisposing factor.

Klinefelter's syndrome is male hypogonadism-the loss of sexual desire with no live sperm in the semen, and small hard testes due to fibrosis. One variation is associated with an extra X chromosome, while non-genetic forms have appeared in healthy patients during homeopathic provings of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) (Br Homoeop J, 1956; XLV: 89-97). I have had partial, but long-term, success with Cortocotrophin 4CH for non-genetic Klinefelter's.

Impotence. Around 85 per cent of the causes of erectile dysfunction are organic or drug-induced, while the most commonly cited psychological cause is 'performance anxiety', but this is more likely an effect-not a cause-of erectile dysfunction.

Antihistamines, antidepressants, beta-blockers, tranquillizers, recreational narcotics, alcohol and tobacco all adversely affect male sexual prowess. Hypothyroidism, advanced diabetes, chronic kidney failure and multiple sclerosis are also predisposing, but an often unsuspected cause is infection (such as a longstanding tooth abscess from which pus is 'recycled' in the body instead of being discharged) (Int J Androl, 1993; 16: 1-13).

However, penile artery atherosclerosis is now known to be the primary cause of impotence in nearly half of men aged over 50 years (JAMA, 1993; 270: 83-90).

Fatty deposits obstruct blood flow and, if severe, can lead to stroke, heart attack, renal hypertension, intermittent claudication and blood clots.

Correcting atherosclerosis requires major changes in eating and drinking habits, and a radical review of other ingrained habits of a lifetime. Avoid all fried foods, sugar, meat, animal fats and proteins, hydrogenated vegetable oils (such as margarine), coffee, tobacco, recreational drugs and alcohol, and increase consumption of cold-water ocean fish (herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines), mucilaginous fibre (pectin, linseed, oat bran), beans, carrots, garlic, onions, shallots and chives. Use ginger freely as a spice and drink. Normalize body weight and indulge in regular exercise (at least 40 minutes four times a week) that works up a slight sweat.

The rise in dairy consumption since the 1950s parallels the drop in sperm count, rise in male infertility and waning of male virility, so abstaining from hormone-fed animal and milk products, and switching to goat's or ewe's milk products, is essential.

With atherosclerotization, the gradual decrease in blood flow over the years eventually leads to collapse of the highly vascularized earlobe-causing a diagonal earlobe crease. Since 1973, some 35 studies have been published (Am J Med, 1983; 75: 1024-32) showing that, in general, the ear-lobe crease had a greater than 80-per-cent accuracy in predicting atherosclerosis and was a better predictor than hyperlipidaemia, smoking, age or sedentariness. So, if a visible earlobe crease has appeared, it's a good idea to have a checkup to see if atherosclerosis is creeping up on you.

Homeopathic remedies for erectile dysfunction include Agave tequilana, Mandra-gora officinarum, Onosmodium, Sabal serrulata, Selenium, (Delphinium) Staphys-agria and Titanium. The homoeopath should also provide a companion remedy to correct any female sexual deficiency.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects around half of men aged 40 to 59 years, and a staggering 85 per cent show some enlarge-ment at age 70, resulting in a diminished and/or slower urinary stream, often with pain or discomfort. Also, the bladder cannot be fully emptied, leading to frequent urges to urinate, even at night. Some develop acute retention of urine, which can be precipitated by the use of diuretics.

For nearly a century, homeopaths have successfully used Sabal serrulata at low potencies or as a mother tincture with substantial improvements in symptoms (Rozhl Chir, 1993; 72: 75-9). Other double-blind studies have shown similar results (Br J Clin Pharmacol, 1984; 18: 461-2; Ann Urol [Paris], 1984; 18: 407-10).
