Dark circles under the eyes

A reader is eager for any thoughts or suggestions on this common problem. She says she always looks tired - with very noticeable 'raccoon' eyes - even when she's had a good night's sleep. She admits that she has been a sugar addict most of her life, but is now trying to take more care of her body and her health. What can readers recommend?

Food allergy

A couple of readers reckon dark circles under the eyes could be a sign of a food allergy or intolerance. Julie recommends trying Yorktest's home food intolerance test kit for the easiest way to identify the culprit/s. See for more information.

Overactive thyroid

According to Karen, however, "An overactive thyroid caused by Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition, can definitely cause circles around the eyes." But if after being checked out by your GP this turns out not to be the case, she recommends increasing your intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium as well as cutting down on salt. She also suggests trying one of the vitamin K-based eye creams or gels that are on the market. Apparently, they help strengthen capillary walls so dark circles and veins become less visible.

Another idea is to try homeopathy. Rita notes that dark circles under the eyes can be related to adrenal/kidney imbalance, for which New Vistas Adrenal Liquescence, is an excellent homeopathic treatment. Australian Bush Flower Essences - particularly She Oak - may also be able to help with dark circles, says Rita.
