I could hardly believe your comment that you 'regard Britain's universal free medical care with a kind of inspired awe' (WDDTY vol 13 no 3). There is nothing free about the NHS. We all pay for it through the nose, only to find ourselves abused when we need help.
While drug companies bang on about the 'dangers' of vitamins, they have covered up the truth about tranquillisers for over 20 years. A common tranquilliser side-effect is low blood platelets, often leading to chronic nosebleeds, mouth bleeds and sometimes death.
For more than 10 years, I had thrombocytopenia, but never received any medical care from doctors. My nosebleeds would last for three or four hours at a time, and then sometimes start again the next day.
Having been persuaded by my Health Authority to file an official complaint, I am now blacklisted at both my local hospitals, and I still cannot find any doctor who will give me help. - Margaret A. Bell, London
