* Gum disease should be added to the list of risk factors for heart disease and type II diabetes, delegates at the International Association for Dental Research have heard. They were told that moderate to severe periodontitis is associated with thickening of the coronary arteries, along with other early signs of coronary heart disease (Lancet, 1998; 352: 121).
* A 28 year old bodybuilder, who had been taking high doses of anabolic steroids from the age of 15, died recently from chronic heart failure. He suffered arterial hypertension, substantial obesity, mood disorders, bone fractures and ruptures to several muscles, doctors at a hospital in Bonn have reported (Lancet, 1998; 352: 33).
* American drug authorities have warned that cisapride (Prepulsid), a drug which improves gastric emptying of liquids and solids, should be used only as a last resort. The drug has been associated with 38 deaths in the US since 1993, caused by heart failure (Lancet, 1998; 352: 120).
