The problems with the elemental diet

MagazineJuly 1998 (Vol. 9 Issue 4)The problems with the elemental diet

With reference to your article on Crohn's disease (WDDTY vol 8 no 9) the very elegant early work of Dr Jonathan Levi at Northwick Park Hospital predated Dr Reardon's work on the Elemental Diet by several years

With reference to your article on Crohn's disease (WDDTY vol 8 no 9) the very elegant early work of Dr Jonathan Levi at Northwick Park Hospital predated Dr Reardon's work on the Elemental Diet by several years. Dr Levi showed that the Elemental Diet was helpful in acute Crohn's patients, but many of them seemed to develop symptoms again when they returned to a normal diet. This was taken a stage further by Dr John Hunter in Cambridge, who showed that in patients given the Elemental Diet and then given single foods as a challenge, it was possible to work out a safe diet which allowed them to heal. I can strongly recommend the publications of Dr Hunter's work. Jonathan Brostoff, London...........
