On aspirin: in 1988, Dr J D Kingham published a report on macular hemorrhage and anticoagulants. In his careful study (tests and control patients were matched by age, sex and more), Dr Kingham made an important discovery.

In not much more than the quantity of aspirin now being proposed to prevent cancer in the esophagus, long term aspirin increased macular hemorrhage, the most severe form of macular degeneration the leading cause of blindness among the elderly (New Eng J Med, 1988; 318: 1126-7).
