Regarding the recent article on chronic fatigue (January 1996), your readers may be interested to know that several components of natural foods offer excellent protection against polio type viruses. One is vitamin A found in butter, cream, eggs, liver and other organ meats, oily fish and cod liver oil. Vitamin A enhances the immune system, and sufficient stores are essential to protect those affected by these viruses from devastating consequences such as paralysis and chronic fatigue. The other dietary factor is lauric acid found in mother's milk and coconut oil, and to a lesser extent, in butter fat. The body makes this 12 carbon saturated fat into monolauren, a substance which has strong anti pathogenic and anti viral effects in the gut.

Unfortunately, sources of vitamin A and lauric acid are the politically incorrect animal fats and tropical oils, wrongly maligned foods which are spurned by the consumer in the mistaken belief that they cause heart disease and cancer.
