A selective assembly of indictments against pesticides

Dear WDDTY

The article on pesticides written by Tuula Tuormaa (vol 6 no 3) is a selective assembly of indictments against pesticides. In addition, there are a number of contradictions and technical errors. The term organochlorides is incorrect; the proper term is organochlorines, since the term chloride implies that the chemicals are chlorine salts, which the pesticides are not. She states that dieldrin and lindane are widely used, when elsewhere she says that these have been banned. Agent Orange is said to be a mixture of 2,4,5-T and dieldrin, when it is a mixture of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T with contamination by a small amount of dioxins. Organochlorides is used in too general a manner, since only members of one subset of this large group of chemicals are potentially estrogenic (some even have anti-estrogenic properties).
