* People with thyroid problems may have built up natural immunity to hepatitis C, doctors have discovered. Researchers in La Spienza University in Rome found that 14 out of 39 patients with a thyroid problem had high levels of hepatitis C antibodies in their serum. Their discovery follows on from earlier research, which linked raised immunity to Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The latest discovery also links it to Graves' disease and asymptomatic thyroiditis (BMJ, January 14, 1995).
* Children coming out of anesthesia would fare better if their parents were present, doctors have concluded. While parents are often with their children as they are anesthetized, it is not usual practice to have them there after the operation. Parents felt they could offer comfort and, in one test, staff felt that the presence of parents was beneficial in 98 per cent of cases (BMJ, January 21, 1995).* Drug use for children has been tightened by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Under new guidelines, drug companies must indicate on the label if there have been full trials on the drug for use by children and, if not, to say so.
