* Babies who are breast fed for more than a year do not suffer from ear infections

* Babies who are breast fed for more than a year do not suffer from ear infections. A case control study reported in the East African Medical Journal (1993;70: 632-3) found that children with middle ear infection had been breast fed for 8.6 months, while those in the study group without the condition had been breast fed for 13.7 months.

* Brain scanning of children with brain tumours is of little value, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has concluded after studying the records of 86 children with the condition. The report concluded that scanning detected only four of the 23 cases where a tumour recurred, and all cases died (NEJM, 31 March, 1994).

* People can get an allergic reactions to gold, either from jewellery or from dental fillings. A study by the University Hospital in Rotterdam of 200 patients complaining of burning and lesions in the mouth found their condition inproved when gold was removed from teeth (JAMA, 16 March, 1994).
