Minimizing your cancer risk

Even if you've been on the Pill for a long time, this doesn't mean you will automatically get breast cancer. A long latent period after hormone exposure is only one reason why breast cancer increases with age. Cell-growth control systems deteriorate with long-term zinc deficiency. Besides lowering your zinc status, taking hormones like the Pill or HRT raises copper levels. Deficiencies in vitamin B6, other B vitamins, zinc, manganese and magnesium impair essential fatty acid pathways. Because estrogens become more powerful when linked with saturated fats, taking supplements of unsaturated essential fatty acids will help promote anti-cancer action. In a number of studies, large doses of essential fatty acids (GLA) have been shown to be effective in killing breast, prostate and lung cancer cells.

If you are coming off the Pill, make sure to have the following tests, which can help a qualified practitioner get your nutritional profile back to normal:

a vitamin and mineral profile

essential fatty acid profile

SODase, an enzyme test to check copper stores

gastrogram to check pancreatic enzyme functions (as hormones often can affect these)

Then work with your practititioner to:

sort out allergies or possible candida albicans overgrowth (both more common with people taking hormones)

avoid alcohol and medical drugs

stop smoking (which increases cancer risk with Pill use)

If you have a number of deficiencies, look to supplementing with

omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids

good quality multi-B vitamins

temporary copper to get levels in order

zinc, manganese and magnesium.

anti-oxidant vitamins A, C and E.
