Harald Gaier's column (vol 4 no 4) on alternative treatments for asthma might lead readers to think they can buy Ephedra plant preparations in shops

Dear WDDTY

Harald Gaier's column (vol 4 no 4) on alternative treatments for asthma might lead readers to think they can buy Ephedra plant preparations in shops. But they can't! The Retail Sale or Supply of Herbal Remedies Order 1977 confines supply to herbal practitioners only.

Similarly, Khella cannot be bought, not because of the law, but because only Potter's make a product from it, and supply of our tablets is confined to herbal practitioners, because of the seriousness of asthma. T J Whittaker, chief chemist, Potters......

We never recommend that patients self medicate, whether with herbal products, drugs or vitamins. WDDTY always recommends that people take anything only after consulting a qualified practitioner.
