* Vitamin E gives protection against heart disease, according to studies in the US of nearly 133,000 people, the results of which were presented to the American Heart Association's annual meeting. Women taking vitamin E for two years halved their risk, while men taking it for the same period had a 26 per cent lower risk.

* The Journal of Clinical Epidemiology's (45:1265-87) recent review of the epidemic of blindness in premature infants points to errors in high dose oxygen therapy for preemies in intensive care. Such errors carry on even today.
