Zyvox

The antibiotic Zyvox (linezolid) is killing patients who have catheter-related infections.

A new study has found that Zyvox dramatically increases the risk of death, compared with other anti-biotics, when given to patients with a catheter that has become infected by Gram-negative bacteria (a group of microorganisms that includes Escher-ichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeru-ginosa).

Perhaps not surprisingly, Zyvox has never been licensed for use against Gram-negative infections (www.fda.gov/ cder/drug/infopage/linezolid/default.htm).
