After reading the letter you published about the potential dangers of the detergent sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) (WDDTY vol 8, no 1) which is included in many common toothpastes, I contacted the toothpaste manufacturer Colgate. This is an abridged ve

"SLS is used as the detergent in almost all toothpastes and has a long history of safe use for this purpose. This has been confirmed by many clinical trials carried out by independent dental surgeons.

"At concentrations well above those used in toothpastes, SLS has been shown to cause some irritation. A small number of people may be particularly sensitive to SLS and suffer reactions. WM, St Pierre Du Bois, Guernsey, CI...........
