Stroke treatment trebles death rate

Doctors are as in the dark as ever about treating stroke victims after new research has revealed that the preferred method actually kills more than it helps.

One of the first major studies into stroke therapy has been stopped early because the treatment was so dangerous. Researchers from the Multicentre Acute Stroke Trial (MAST) found that the drug streptokinase, coupled with aspirin, nearly trebled the risk of killing the patient within 10 days. The risks were reduced if streptokinase was given on its own (The Lancet, December 9, 1995).
