SSRIs: Pregnant women fear they will be forced to take danger drugs

A group of American mothers is fighting legislation that they say will force them to take SSRI antidepressant drugs such as Prozac even while they are pregnant.  The Mothers Act is supposed to raise awareness of, and provide help for, new mothers who are suffering from post-natal depression – but its opponents fear it is a front for drug companies that want to increase revenues.

One of the main opponents to the proposed legislation is Amy Philo, who was given antidepressants following the birth of her son Isaac.  She started having violent thoughts that she wanted to kill him and take her own life, and so her doctor increased the SSRI dosage.

Eventually she realized the drug was causing the thoughts, and so she weaned herself off the drug, and the desire to kill herself and her child also disappeared.

Proponents of the act say that it is designed to stop tragedies such as the death of Melanie Sykes, who jumped to her death while she was supposedly depressed following the birth of her child.  However, it appears she was already taking antidepressants, and this may have been the cause of her suicidal thoughts.
