Smokers: The Med diet can help undo all your bad work

Smokers can do much to undo the damage caused by their habit by adopting a Mediterranean diet.

Researchers from Harvard have found that the diet can reduce the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by as much as 50 per cent.

It’s a disease that mainly affects smokers, and it’s the world’s fifth major killer.

While there is no cure, researchers have found that the diet dramatically reduces the risk, even among smokers.  The diet is rich in fruit, vegetables and fish, and has already been proven to increase longevity, reduce heart disease, and protect against some cancers.  The diet’s main nutritional elements include beta-carotene, vitamin C, tocopherols, polyphenols and essential minerals.

Researchers reckon it’s the anti-oxidants and polypehnols in the diet that help fight COPD.
