Dear WDDTY:
As a practice nurse, I was recently at a presentation of the 4S cholesterol study (WDDTY vol 5 no 10), which claimed to show that the drug could lower cholesterol and heart disease. Sponsored by the drug company which produces simvastatin, there obviously was a bias towards the product.
I was keen to enquire whether the patients in the study had made any modifications to their lifestyles, bearing in mind these were patients with proven coronary heart disease.
The co-ordinator of the study replied that the same results produced by simvastatin on cholesterol lowering and heart disease could be achieved by modification of lifestyle. Mrs R M Payne, London.....
