Short-term memory loss

A reader is keen for any thoughts and suggestions for her husband, who is suffering from short-term memory loss.  He has had several appointments over the last two years with a psychiatrist, but the couple don’t agree with the diagnosis: Alzheimer’s disease.  “He is not confused, knows exactly where he is and knows who people are,” says our reader.  “He is also still a very capable driver.”  Are there any other conditions that may be causing this symptom, she asks?  Can any natural methods help?  Her husband is currently on medication for heart problems (supraventricular tachycardia, or SVT), so he has not been prescribed any drugs for Alzheimer’s.  Can anyone help?

A number of readers recommend checking the side effects of your husband’s heart medication.  Memory loss may well be one of them.  Indeed, Colin’s short-term memory improved dramatically after he dumped all the heart pills he was taking. Additionally, his blood pressure lowered, his hair stopped falling out, his ankles stopped swelling and he’s still alive!  Nevertheless, it’s a big risk, he says, and he was helped hugely by a change in diet and chelation therapy.

Alternatively, perhaps different prescribed drugs are interfering with each other, says Sue, or they could be interfering with the nutrients needed for memory function.  Another possibility is that your husband may have been recommended a very low-fat diet for his heart condition, and therefore may not be getting the essential fatty acids necessary for optimum mental health, she says.  Her advice is to go to the library and do some research on the subject.

Other readers propose specific remedies for the memory loss.  Betty suggests B complex vitamins while Helen highly recommends a product called Lambert’s Refreshall, “which contains Gingko biloba as well as other memory-enhancing ingredients.”  Another herb that might help is ginseng, which has worked well for one reader.
